  HALF-TIME FULL-TIME DATA

Layout and headings of each file type are as described.
The files are available in the formats listed and are suitable
for analyses in spreadsheet and database applications.

In addition 'European Results Files' are provided for.....

RESULTS AND TABLES  FROM 1990
These files contain league soccer results and tables
from season 1990-91 to the end of last season. The major English and Scottish league divisions are covered, plus the
Conference, Dr. Martens, Unibond and Ryman premier
league divisions. There are nine files in total.

Results and tables files available as .....

CSV = Comma Separated for spreadsheets
WDB = MS Works 2.0 Database and later
WKS = MS Works 2.0 Spreadsheet and later
XLS = MS Excel vers 3.0 and later
MDB = MS Access vers 7.0 and later
TXT = Simple Text File

Further notes on file formats .....
Please select only one file format when ordering.
But note that TEXT format is not suitable for sorting
and analysis in a spreadsheet or database.
In fact CSV format is strongly recommended.
CSV files are considerably smaller in size and avoid
problems associated with large files sent as email
attachments. More importantly CSV files will import
into all spreadsheet applications including Excel.

European 'Premier' Leagues .....
An additional set of files gives full results only for six
'Premier' European leagues up to the end of last season.
These are for a minimum of the ten last Seasons.
The European results files have the same layout as
the UK files but are supplied ONLY in CSV format.
The European 'premier' leagues are....
England, Netherlands, France, Spain,
Germany and Italy.

File Compression .....
Archive files for email attachment are compressed
using WINZIP.  This is a standard file compression
application. It can be downloaded FREE at the
link opposite although may well already be installed
on your computer system.

RATEFORM VALUES FROM 1990
These files contain league soccer results and rateform
prediction values from season 1990-91. Major English
and Scottish league divisions are covered, plus the
Conference, Dr. Martens, Unibond and Ryman premier
league divisions. Separate files for each division.
League files for the English Premier, 1st, 2nd and 3rd
begin in season 1992-93, that is from the creation of
the English Premier League. The Scottish 3rd begins
in 1994-95, while all other files provide data from 1990.
Files give the opportunity to analyse the effectivness
of 'Rateform' values as result predictors. Cumulative
values for every league match played up to a decade or
more, plus actual results, are ideal for statistical analysis.
These files have the layout described opposite and are
supplied in CSV format... perfect for spreadsheets.
There are extracts of these files here....

The Rateform Method .....

A simple but effective system used to rate football
teams and make predictions has, for convenience, been
named 'rateform'. It has its origins in Professor Elo's
'The Rating of Chessplayers' and there are further
details in the book 'Football Fortunes' and at this site...
  MABEL's MATCH ANALYSIS

The basic idea is that as football matches are played
over a season individual points totals are updated for
each team depending upon match results.
In allocating points to teams this method considers
important variables such as the comparative quality
of the opposition and whether results are achieved
at home or away. These are factors not considered
when league points or goal averages are compared.
Rateform values carry forward from one season to
the next and form the basis of match predictions.

Layout of Rateform files .....
index = record index number
season = varies from 1990-01 to
 the end of last season
date = date match played
  ( format 'yyyymmdd' )
home-team = home team name
h-pld = home team matches played up
to but not including the shown date
h-rf =  home team rateform value
before the given match is played
away-team = away team name
a-pld = away team matches played up
to but not including the shown date
a-rf =  away team rateform value
before the given match is played
res = result of match as H, D or A
h-gls = home team goals scored in match
a-gls = away team goals scored in match
rfdif = rateform difference before match
played. This value equals h-rf minus a-rf
plus 100, where 100 is home advantage.
rfpred = values over 100 are Homes,
less than minus 100 are Aways, while
intermediate values predict a Draw.

CUMULATIVE GOALS AND POINTS
These files contain league soccer results plus
cumulative goals scored and lost. Also recorded are
cumulative league points, for each match played.
Complementing the cumulative 'rateform' files, these
are values from season 1990-91. The major English
and Scottish league divisions are covered, plus the
Conference, Dr. Martens, Unibond and Ryman premier
divisions. There are separate files for each division.
Files for the English Premier, 1st, 2nd and 3rd begin
in football season 1992-93, that is from the creation of
the English Premier League. The Scottish 3rd begins
in 1994-95, while all other files provide data from 1990.

The total goals scored and lost, and league points
gained to date, are shown prior to every match. The
resulting match score is recorded. So it is an easy
matter to analyse the relevance of goals and league
points as factors in determining subsequent results.

These files have the layout described opposite and are
supplied in CSV format for spreadsheet analysis.
